Recognize Someone Struggling to Read

We are often ask if there are ways to tell if an employee, a friend, or a family member is struggling to read. We've put together a list of 33 clues that might indicate a struggling reader. Here are clues 1-11 that might tip you off.


  1. Passing paperwork on.

  2. Writing very little or misspelling lot’s of words.

  3. Avoiding situations or participation in activities in which he/she might have to read or write.

  4. Ordering something not on the menu.

  5. Ordering the same article whenever he/she goes to a restaurant.

  6. Having someone else order for him in a restaurant.

  7. Saying he or she cannot read because they forgot their glasses

  8. Taking paperwork home to fill it out or getting someone else to complete it.

  9. Rarely responding to written messages.

  10. Paying bills in person or with cash to avoid having to write checks.

  11. Avoid using ATM machines.
